School of the Humanities and Social Sciences

The aim of SHARE is to encourage and facilitate participation in postgraduate research in the humanities and social sciences.

What does SHARE offer?

SHARE is a paid research experience internship. You will receive:

  • A stipend equivalent to the Real Living Wage (currently £10.90 per hour), paid monthly, for a 35 hour week, for the six-week programme. This is intended to offset any loss from other paid summer employment opportunities.
  • Free-of-charge accommodation provided by Gonville & Caius College. This programme aims to give you a postgraduate experience and postgraduate students are usually housed in accommodation based outside the College grounds.
  • Reimbursement of your travel expenses to and from Cambridge at the start and end of the programme
  • Six weeks of research project experience, research training, postgraduate study information, and mentoring

SHARE is designed to:

  • Enhance your research skills
  • Enhance your ability to make a competitive application for postgraduate courses and funding
  • Give you the opportunity to engage with inspiring social science research staff and students at the University of Cambridge
  • Inform you about opportunities for postgraduate study and research careers in the social sciences

Expectations

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Live in Cambridge for the duration of the programme
  • For full-time internships, participate in a research project for 35 hours per week for 6 weeks on the dates provided (3 July - 11 August 2023). Part-time enrolment is also available
  • Attend all training sessions organised for the programme
  • Attend all other events and seminars organised for the programme (some of which will take place outside typical working hours).
  • Commit to providing all requested feedback at the end of the programme so that we can improve it for future years and report to our funders.

At all times, you will be expected to maintain the highest standards of research integrity.

Through SHARE we hope that you'll be informed about studying at the University of Cambridge at postgraduate level, and improve your CV and academic skills. The University of Cambridge, along with most other research-intensive UK universities, normally expects a minimum of a good 2:1 as an entry requirement for postgraduate study, and many highly competitive programmes will normally expect a first-class degree. Students who take part and decide to apply to the University of Cambridge do not receive any preferential treatment at the application stage.

COVID-19

Whilst the programme is designed as a residential event, should Covid-19 government guidelines prevent this, we reserve the right to amend the programme to a blended or online programme instead. Details concerning how this will affect the programme will be added to this website.
