Interdisciplinary PhD study spaces
The Hub is an interdisciplinary space specifically for PhD students belonging to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences to gather and work. The Hub is located right in the centre of town, between the departments of Sociology and Social Anthropology on New Museums Site, Free School Lane.
The study spaces
Hot desks
Within the Hub, there are:
- 15 hot desks for any SHSS PhD student to use
- Two powerful computers with data processing software that are available to use as a hot desk
Allocated desks
There are also other desks which are allocated to departments and faculties. At the start of each academic year, faculties and departments are allocated a number of desks based on their individual spaces needs. Not all departments and faculties within the School have an allocation, if they have suitable PhD spaces of their own. They may choose to use their allocation on a shared or hot desking basis. Students may be allocated either within the Hub, or the Mond Building, which is opposite the Hub.
Access
If you have been told by your department that you have been allocated a desk, or you would like to use a hot desk, please take the following steps:
- Undertake the University's fire safety training.
- Email enquiries@sociology.cam.ac.uk with your fire safety certificate, along with your full name, CRsid, and department. You will then be invited along to a 10-minute, in-person induction in the Hub.
The Hub is open from 7am to 10pm every weekday, and weekend access can be granted on request.
Facilities
Kitchenette
With free tea, coffee and milk provided.
Free to use lockers
Including lockers with power sockets for charging your devices. Any personal items left on desks are student's own responsibility.
Printing
There is a printer in the Hub and one upstairs in the Mond. Both use PaperCut/PrintDeploy, like most printers in the university, operating off of a student's access card and any credits added to their account.
Supervision rooms
There are three bookable rooms for supervising undergraduates and taking calls.
Reception
Onsite receptionist in the Department of Sociology between 9am-3pm, Monday-Friday.
Code of Practice
There are fewer spaces available than the demand. Those assigned desk spaces are therefore expected to:
- Use them regularly
- Be a responsible citizen and use the space respectfully
- Observe health and safety requirements
- Take good care of their own property in the space
If you have been allocated a desk and you either do not use the space appropriately, or you are found to not be using the space, your space will be re-allocated to another student.
